Frequently Asked Mattress Questions
1. How is the mattress shipped? Unassembled via UPS or FED-EX.
2. How long does it take to assemble? About 30 minutes.
3. Can the Contour-Air™ Mattress be used on either a box spring or a platform? YES. However, if the mattress is used on a box spring, you need to place a hardboard or plywood panel (minimum 1/2" thick) beneath the mattress for proper support.
4. How thick is the Contour-Air™ Mattress? About 11 inches.
5. Can I use standard fitted sheets? Yes.
6. How does the Contour-Air™ compare with the Tempur-Pedic® or Select Comfort® mattresses? According to our comparison study, Contour-Air™ has about 20 more advantages.
7. What are some important benefits of the Contour-Air™? Much lower cost, pure wool filling, machine washable top, trouble-free velcro instead of an ordinary zipper, 3 inch thick layer of "visco elastic" foam, two instant-response inflator motors, rather than only one very slow inflator such as Select Comfort's® remote control inflator.
8. Is the inflator totally quiet? Yes, 99.99% of the time. The few seconds per month it is used (air mattresses are seldom adjusted) the little sound it does make is certainly not disturbing. The fact is, once the mattress is adjusted to your preference, you may not adjust it again for months. Furthermore, it literally takes only a few seconds to adjust our mattress and mattresses are very seldom adjusted during the night. Inflators such as Select Comfort® remote control model, have about a 30 time slower inflation rate, which is a big disadvantage. If, for example, you have your mattress soft for sleeping but want to firm it up each morning for appearance, it could take over 10 minutes compared to just seconds with ours.
9. Does the inflator have a remote control with digital read-out? No, for seven good reasons. (1) Remote controls are easily misplaced or lost. (2) There is only one control for two sleepers. (3) The digital read-out cannot be relied on for accuracy as it can vary for different reasons. Even changing your sleeping position affects the reading. (4) It's far more costly. (5) It is 30 times slower to inflate and adjust the mattress. (6) With one control it is easy to inadvertently adjust the wrong side of the mattress. (7) Inflators such as Select Comfort's remote control are not infinitely adjustable, it only has about 20 firmness settings.
10. How does the length of your warranty compare with Select Comfort® and Tempur-Pedic®? Our warranty is 21 years and theirs is 20.
11. Is there any advantage to a five year full coverage warranty over a one year full coverage? Both warranties cover only the manufacturing defects in the product which almost always show up within the first month of use. If there is no defect within the first month there is little chance that there will ever be one. Normal "wear and tear" is not covered during the full coverage period. So, how much advantage can there be? Warranties are a marketing tool that can be used very deceptively. Our warranty is clear, honest, and not deceiving.
12. What is the trial period? 30 days. It doesn't take more than 30 days to test a mattress. Longer trial periods serve the manufacturers, not you. Obviously, you are less apt to return the mattress after a long 90-day trial period. The longer you keep a product, the more difficult it becomes to return it. That's what companies count on.
13. Why is it that Select Comfort® has a foam support between the air chambers that can be felt when lying on their mattresses but Contour-Air™ doesn't? Select Comfort's® mattresses do not have the three inch layer of visco-elastic foam on top of their air chambers, as we have, to provide the needed center support. Therefore, the foam support is needed to prevent the sleeper from sinking down between the air chambers. The foam support when felt can be undesireable.
14. What prevents the air chambers within the mattress from pushing the mattress sides out of shape? Air mattresses contain foam perimeter rails that retain the air chambers. The side rails in the Contour-Air™ mattress are connected to each other over their full length which positively prevents the mattress sides from ever pushing out. The rails in the Select Comfort® Mattress, however, are only connected at the corners which does nothing to maintain the shape of the mattress sides.
15. Is the Contour-Air mattress 100% American made? Yes. The Select Comfort® and Tempur-Pedic® mattresses, however, have imported components.
16. How does your air chamber compare with Select Comfort's®? Ours is made of self-extinguishing flame retardant vinyl, theirs is made of flammable rubber. Ours is American made, theirs is imported. Ours has air chambers running the length of your body, which in our opinion is far more comfortable, than having them run across your body (like a washboard) as the Select Comfort® does.
17. Does Select Comfort® or Tempur-Pedic® Mattresses have even one feature that can compare to the Contour-Air™ Mattress? Not in our opinion. But, make your own comparison by clicking on the comparisons listed below.
